                          Time and again, under the lure of new ideas, I went to Laurrell with glowing enthusiasm. Laurrel would gently say, 'Study your union card, Sam, and if the idea doesn't square with that, it ain't true.' My trade union card came to be my standard in all new problems.

Samuel Gompers moved to the cigarmaker David Hirsch & Company - 1873.

Karl Laurrell took Gompers under his wing, challenging his more simplistic ideas and urging Gompers to put his faith in the organized economic movement of trade unionism rather than the socialist political movement.

How can I see all the quotes by a particular Author?

Simply click on the name of the Author underneath a quote to see a list of all the quotes by that Author.

Another way to see all the quotes by a particular Author is to click on the alphabet letter in the header that corresponds to the first letter of the Author's last name. Then select the Author you want from the list to see a list of all the quotes by that Author.

How can I see all the quotes on a particular Topic?

Simply click on the Topic menu item and you will see an alphabetical list of all our Topics. Click the topic you are interested in to see a list of all the quotes on that Topic.
