The title of the book, The Party Thieves, partly explains that. It's complicated. Samantha Maiden from The Australian phoned me during the 2007 election campaign and asked me to comment on Kevin Rudd's attempts at media manipulation. I told her that coincidentally, a colleague had only hours before said to me : "You know, we (the media) will have to go to war with Rudd after the election . . . (so) we might as well start now." Perhaps understandably, there was confusion. Sam took it that the second part of the quote, "we might as well start now", belonged to me. The headline the next day read "Cassidy declares war on Rudd". Of course, I did not. I would imagine that somewhere in the recesses of the ABC, there are rules against journalists declaring war on political leaders. Some months later, a colleague tried to explain the misunderstanding to Rudd. He fell about laughing, loving the irony of a journalist blaming the media. In any case, my loss was Rove's gain and when I whinged about that on Insiders, I got a very quick lesson from Julia Gillard.

The best moment - apart from some truly fascinating experiences in places like the White House, the Kremlin and the Great Hall of the People - was a front-row seat to the bicentennial celebrations in Sydney in 1988. The worst moment was undoubtedly my first day in the job. We flew to Perth and Hawke never said a word the whole way. Then he handed me what I thought was a crumpled pile of newspapers, which of course I threw out. When he got to the hotel, he immediately demanded his meticulously marked-up copy of the racing form guide.

Because the leaks (and Rudd) had such a massive impact on the campaign, the approach to the reporting was vastly different to any other campaign. One story tended to dominate, certainly through weeks two and three. The breathless focus on Mark Latham as he stood around with the rest of the media waiting for something to happen was plain embarrassing. The proliferation of the social media means there is now an endless stream of opinion and information and the audience will just have to act as its own filter, or go mad.
