Clearly Peter Hollingworth shares Howard's low opinion of his predecessor, Sir William Dean, in that highest of office - he said as much to friends and associates. Thus he was happy to sew his lips together during the Tampa affair and the subsequent death of 350 asylum-seekers. Not a squeak out of him. In Hollingworth, Howard had the perfect Governor General. Yet the appointment has proved to be too clever by half, as serious a lapse in judgment as Whitlam's anointment of Kerr. Clearly God is not mocked. Hollingworth and Howard deserve each other.

Bumping into Jeff Kennett at an airport, I thanked him for considerably prolonging my mother's life. No, he hadn't passed a piece of legislation granting boons to old age pensioners. Rather, my mother would sit in front of the telly, waiting for the news, just so she could scream abuse at images of the then Victorian premier. 'You gave her a reason to live,' I explained. He seemed very touched. John Howard fills the same role for me.

The score so far? 5-0. The PM and senior ministers, both current and ex, have been revealed as behaving shabbily, ignobly, in and after our election.
