All that is known about Booker’s mother, is that she was a black slave, and his father a white man.
First wife, Fannie N. Smith, died 1884, one child Portia M. Washington.
Second wife Olivia A. Davidson,died 1889,  two sons Booker T. Washington Jr. and Ernest Davidson Washington
Third wife Margaret James Murray, no children.                          
Booker T. Washington became the first black man to dine as a guest at the White House in 1901.                          
Freed from slavery as a child, gained an education, and as a young man was appointed to lead a teachers' college for blacks. From this position of leadership he rose into a nationally prominent role as spokesman for African Americans.
