Father James Dennis, a master mariner and later publican, was a widower when he married Kate Tobin, who died, aged thirty-nine, when Dennis  was only fourteen. He and his two younger brothers were cared for by their mother's four maiden sisters, and at boarding school in Adelaide.

Wife Olive Harriet - 28 June 1917 - 22 June 1938, after his death.                          
His 1916 publication of The Sentimental Bloke sold 65,000 copies in its first year, and by 1917 he was the most prosperous poet in Australian history.
