The word Shōwa is the name of the era that corresponded with the Emperor's reign, and was made the Emperor's own name upon his death.

During World War II, ostensibly under Emperor Hirohito's leadership, Japan formed alliances with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, forming the Axis Powers.

Emperor Shōwa's state funeral was held on February 24, and unlike that of his predecessor, it was formal but not conducted in a strictly Shinto manner. A large number of world leaders attended the funeral, including U.S. President George H. W. Bush, French President François Mitterrand, the Duke of Edinburgh, and many others. Emperor Shōwa is buried in the Imperial mausoleum in Hachiōji, alongside Emperor Taishō, his father.
