A closeted gay man for nearly all of his life, Beard would often voice his regret that those he found attractive - younger, slender men - rarely returned the favor. At times, frustrated by his personal situation, he would discuss his romantic life with long-time friend and confidante Julia Child.                          
Recognized by many as the father of American gastronomy.
James Beard starred in the first cooking show on TV.                          
Initially trained as a singer and actor, and moved to New York City in 1937.
