Her father Albert Baez, a physicist - co-inventor of the x-ray microscope and author of one of the most widely used physics textbooks in the U.S., Refused to work on the "Manhattan Project" to build an atomic bomb at Los Alamos, a decision which had a profound effect on young Joan; he also refused lucrative defense industry jobs during the height of the Cold War.
