Uncle of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
The prevailing extreme anti-German feelings obliged his father to resign. In 1917, when the Royal Family stopped using their German names and titles, Prince Louis of Battenberg became Louis Mountbatten. He tried and failed to have the name of the House of Windsor changed to that of 'Mountbatten' on the marriage of the future Duke of Edinburgh to the future Queen Elizabeth II; the late Queen Mary reportedly refused to have anything to do with 'that Battenberg nonsense', and the name of the royal house has remained Windsor.
