Father Karamchand Gandhi, the diwan (Prime Minister) of Porbandar.
At the age of 13, Gandhi was married through his parents' arrangements to Kasturba Makhanji, four sons: Harilal, born in 1888; Manilal, born in 1892; Ramdasi, born in 1897; and Devdas,  born in 1900.                                              
Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times, in 1937, 1938, 1939,1947 and 1948, a few days before his assassination. However he was not awarded the Nobel Prize because he was "neither a real politician nor a humanitarian relief worker".                                              
Anti-apartheid activist and former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, was inspired by Gandhi. Others include, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, Steve Biko, and Aung San Suu Kyi.
