In spite of his position in society, he worked as a merchant seaman, and witnessed a flooging. He vowed to improve the lot of the common seaman.

Co-founded the anti-slavery Free Soil Party in 1848 and representing the fugitive slave Anthony Burns in Boston in 1854.
