Bauhaus, literally "house of construction" - stood for "School of Building".

The school existed in three German cities:
Weimar - 1919-1925
Dessau - 1925-1932
Berlin - 1932-1933, under three different architect-directors: Walter Gropius - 1919-1928
Hannes Meyer - 1928-1930
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - 1930-1933, when the school was closed by its own leadership under pressure from the Nazi regime.

Gropius could not draw, and was dependent on partner-interpreters for the whole of his career. In school he paid students to complete his homework for him.
